I know there has been a lot written about DriverKit and how wonderful it is but for a driver like SoftRAID which can support 17 GB/sec read and write as measured by AJA System Test (2 Accelsior 8M2s in a 2019 Mac Pro as a RAID 0 volume), the extra overhead would kill performance.

This is because the most expensive part of starting a read or write request is transferring the memory, which contains the file data, from user memory space to kernel memory space. For a kernel extension, like the SoftRAID driver, this happens once, when the read or write request gets handed to the file system. For a Driver Kit driver, this happens 3 times: when the request gets handed to the file system, when the file system hands the memory to the Driver Kit driver and then when the memory gets handed back to the kernel to get sent to the driver for the disk or blade.

Comment on SoftRAID 7 in Final Testing for macOS Ventura by OWC Tim https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/84128-softraid-7-in-final-testing-for-macos-ventura/#comment-260699 Mon, 07 Nov 2022 18:06:43 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=84128#comment-260699 In reply to Harold.

SoftRAID version 7 was released last Friday. It will allow you to upgrade from SoftRAID version 6 without losing any data from your SoftRAID volumes. The ability to grow a SoftRAID volume was broken with the introduction of macOS 11. We will be restoring this again in a new release of SoftRAID in the near future.

For some users, RAID 6 is a great solution. With the release of SoftRAID version 7, we decided to prioritize working with Apple to fix bugs in macOS and SoftRAID rather than adding new RAID levels. RAID 6 is still on our list of desired new features and very close to the top.

Please contact Customer Support if you would like to beta text our RAID 6 implementation.

While Apple may not support the 2013 Mac Pro with Ventura, we still support it with SoftRAID version 7.

Thank you. My team’s goal is that your OWC storage product works as well as your iPhone, i.e., it works so well you never even have to think about it.

We are working with Apple on the problem which affects some users of Mac Studios. I will post an update when we have this finally resolved.

Comment on How to Adjust Transparency and Contrast in macOS by Oskar https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/78374-how-to-adjust-transparency-and-contrast-in-macos/#comment-260690 Mon, 07 Nov 2022 12:00:41 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=78374#comment-260690 It works great, thanks. Interestingly some other of the options on that menu, like ‘increase contrast’ takes effect immediately while the ‘reduce transparency’ one half worked. The window of the game I had open at the time still was trasparent but the scrollbar-thingy with all the apps lost all transparency immediately. When I restarted the game window though it went though fully. I’ve had this problem for a couple of years but it only matters when the background windows are very colourful but it’s nice to finally have it fixed
Once again, thanks Dennis!

If so, even after Ventura’s release are you still waiting on Apple to release the necessary capabilities to DriverKit so as to no longer require a kernel extension?

Comment on Top 10 Apple Headlines of October 2022 by Ed Arnold https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/84175-top-10-apple-headlines-of-october-2022/#comment-260673 Sat, 05 Nov 2022 19:35:08 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=84175#comment-260673 It is good to hear that Apple is de-carbonizing its production. But it needs to de-carbonize how it offers credit. The Apple Card is managed by Goldman-Sachs, which as we know, is assisting in providing capital to fossil-fuel companies. Apple needs to provide credit that is not involved in the fossil fuel business.

Comment on Reverting an APFS Drive to HFS+ the Easy Way by Terrance https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/62926-reverting-an-apfs-drive-to-hfs-the-easy-way/#comment-260672 Sat, 05 Nov 2022 17:32:35 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=62926#comment-260672 Is there an easy way to revert the Macintosh HD main drive back to HFS? I tried out the APFS to create 4 different storage drives on a 4TB drive but I wish to go back because installing Windows 10 on one of the partitions is not working or installing due to the other 3 partitions (MacOS , Flac music and Alac music partitions ).
I have to go back to MacOS journaled then I believe I can install Boot Camp easily and not cause partition limit issues with the Windows 10 installation disc or .cdr/.iso .
