2 USB 3 port provides .9A (900mA) of power. This will charge devices requiring 1.0A at a slightly slower rate than a factory power adapter. Larger devices such as tablets requiring 2.1A or higher will not charge. There is no power supplied to USB 3 (or USB 2) port while the host computer is turned off or in “sleep” mode.

  • My 2015 Macbook Pro is about to be replaced. I currently connect it to a 2560×1440 display through a Thunderbolt 2 to DVI connector (because there is an ioGear 4-port KVM in between and it’s all DVI). Works great. I’m wondering if I can use a HDMI to DVI converter with this dock on my new 2019 Macbook Pro 16″. Could you venture a guess?

The “higher than 1920×1080” resolution is usually what breaks the deal with many Thunderbolt 3 to DVI adapters.

  • Needing an extra Thunderbolt 2 port on my iMac because One port is for apple cinema display and one is for an external ssd drive

I have another external ssd drive but no port

Would a thunderbolt 3 dock work with the apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adaptor?

    • Hi Jayeson, yes, you can use a Thunderbolt 3 dock with a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, and run the dock on a Thunderbolt 2 iMac. You’d need to move the Cinema display to the Mini DisplayPort on the dock, as the Thunderbolt 3 dock only has a Mini DisplayPort (no Thunderbolt 2 capabilities). So it would be an adapter out of one of the iMac ports, to the dock. Cinema display in the MiniDisplay port. Adapter out of the second Thunderbolt 3 port on the dock, to plug in one of the Thunderbolt 2 drives. The second Thunderbolt 2 drive can then run out of the second Thunderbolt 2 port on the machine.

Please let me know if you need further clarification!

      • My understanding was that the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter doesn’t work with bus powered devices? So as this dock doesn’t have an AC power adapter it would only work with Macs with Thunderbolt 3 ports?
