Rating: 4/5 Can your OS be upgraded to Catalina with this card? November 16, 2021 I've been running this card with Mojave for several years and it works perfectly. I'd like to upgrade my OS to Catalina, since some new software won't run on Mojave. Is there a way to get this card to work on Catalina and still have metal support?

Rating: 5/5 Easiest upgrade ever November 16, 2020 I'm a photographer, and until recently haven't needed to upgrade my 2010 Mac Pro to Mojave. However, things change, and now I must. But to do so, I needed a metal-capable video card.

Fortunately, this one appeared, and after reading several reviews, I bought it.

It was made for this computer. Slid right in, plugged right up, booted right up.

Fabulous. You can't go wrong with this card. I'm very happy with it.

Rating: 5/5 My "Hackintosh" lives on October 13, 2020 I've been eyeing a way to stave off obsolescence of my mid-2010 Mac pro, since it’s a workhorse choked with RAM, multiple hard drives, and an OWC PCI card and SSD.

Hit the wall when OSX 10.14 was released, not to mention no more application updates. 10.14 and up requires the “metal” video card, and my stock system was no longer compatible. Gotta say I was skeptical of plugging a non-supported PC card into the Mac and expect it to flame on with no problems.

It flamed back on with no problems.

I think the key is the custom power cable that OWC bundles with this card. On its own, this beast simply draws way too much power through the PCI slot, so this is a clever solution. My one regret is that the mother board only has two power plugs for the cable — I had hoped to keep using the original 1GB Radeon card to drive the 2nd monitor. That card also needs a motherboard plug. So, the new card drives both with zero fan noise.

The install could not have been simpler. Just make sure to plug the dual power cables into their plugs first — then seat the new video card, otherwise you won’t have enough space to maneuver.

The lack of a glowing Apple at boot up was a little disconcerting, but within 15 seconds, the familiar login screen appeared.

Apple needs to sell new hardware, so it gradually orphans older, functional workstations like the 2010/2012 Pros. Thanks to this solution, my decade-old Mac will not go quietly into the night just yet. . .

Rating: 5/5 Outstanding Video Card July 23, 2020 Mac Pro, 2010, Mojave. This card is running a 5120x1440 LG display at 60hz. As of this writing, Catalina does not support the LG 5120x1440 displays (on any machine, hacked or not). I dropped back to Mojave and it's breathtaking.

Rating: 5/5 Worked right out of the box w/30" Cinema Display May 20, 2020 Just purchased this card to give my old Mac Pro a new lease on life (4,1 flashed to 5,1). I was a concerned from earlier reviews that my trusty 30" Cinema Display might not work without having to use a DisplayPort adapter, but it booted up and ran perfectly the first time through the DVI port (although without the Apple startup screen as expected). Looking forward to faster rendering and performance in Adobe Premiere.

Rating: 5/5 This makes a 2010 Mac Pro fell new again! May 1, 2020 Wow! I have to say with just about everything maxed out on this 2009 4,1 upgraded to 5,1 with two 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon and 128GB RAM plus an OWC Mercury Accelsior S + OWC Mercury 6G 512GB SSD as the boot drive, adding this card has given this Mac Pro new (more) life! The installations issues. The Mac Pro booted up great. Ran some benchmarks like Cinebench, Geekbench 5 and Unreal Heaven. Next, I will be installing a OWC Accelsior 4M2 with 1TB M.2 NVMe SSDs as the new boot drive! Keeping fingers crossed!

Rating: 4/5 RX 580 installed to 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 March 8, 2020 Installed 10.14.6 Mojave to a new HDD, replaced OEM GPU with this RX-580, and it's working as it should - with an exception or two (which is probably why the MP 4,1 is not on OWC's compatible list). Boot screen and optionKey drive select are unavailable, but HDMI display lights up at login screen and RX-580 performs well.

After firmware hack to 5,1, startup progress bar appears briefly (about half full ) prior to login, drive select boot screen still missing.

MP 4,1/5,1 may have other issues with some versions of Mojave - unrelated to GPU - which include stuttering audio and occasional sleep/wake kernel panics that clear on restart. Working on solutions to these, but this card saved my 4,1 from oblivion.

Rating: 3/5 Tech support incomplete February 11, 2020 This product works fine and is a great upgrade to the old original GPU in my 2010 Mac Pro. As I'm using the second PCIe slot in my Mac for an Avid HDX card (which also requires power from motherboard), I'm using an external Corsair PSU I had to power the graphics card.

This is a three star review because tech support from both OWC and Radeon completely missed diagnosing an issue I had when using the DVI port. When using a DVI to HDMI adaptor I kept getting a pink overlay on all monitors. I tried 3 monitors and several DVI adapters of different types. Nothing worked - although any and all combination of the same monitors and adapters worked with my old GPU.

We concluded that that DVI port was bad and I got a return auth. I wound up digging out an old monitor that had a DVI input and ran a straight DVI to DVI connection. The image was great. Digging further I found that there was an option I could choose in my newer monitors that would correct the issue.

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=1374

Now DVI to HDMI works and there is no need to spend my time and money returning a product that was functioning properly.

That three calls to tech support at OWC and one to Radeon didn't catch this is amazing to me. All the techs were very nice and spent a good amount of time with me but good grief! I would think this would be common knowledge for a product that's currently being promoted heavily.

Rating: 3/5 Works for almost everything February 10, 2020 I currently was refurbishing a 2010 Mac Pro and this seemed like the answer. At this point it will not run at all an Apple 30in Cinema display. All my other monitors with same or different connections works fine, no issues, blank screen on the 30" - plugged into my other tower with 5870 and fires right up... cannot figure it out. So I guess I have to purchase a new display.

Rating: 5/5 Great replacement ! August 6, 2019 When I downloaded and installed the latest version of High Sierra ( Version 10.13.6 ), my 5770 died on me and my screen went grey with black vertical lines. I didn't know at the time, but I was pretty sure that this was the problem. I made some phone calls to OWC and talked to some technicians who told me that my problem was surely my 5770... 95% sure. So, I decided to order the Radeon. Well, now my Mac Pro 2012 is working just fine and everything reappeared on the screen just like before my crash ! Like always, I received , in 6 days, a great product that was very well-packed and delivered by professionals !

Rating: 4/5 Appears to work July 22, 2019 I also purchased this card and power cable bundle to work with a mid 2010 PowerMac 5,1. It appears to work, however as other reviewers have noted, I am concerned about the power needed and the cable supplied. The card is listed as requiring 500 W of power. However, the PCIe slot can only supply 75 watts (75 W to each slot, for a total of 300W, but since it only uses 1 slot, I think that means 75 W) and the two plugs on the motherboard appear to have 125 watts each. The cable supplied by OWC has one 6 pin connector on the motherboard end and an 8 pin connector on the video card end. The image on macsales.com appears to use both of the 6 pin connectors on the motherboard side. Did I get the wrong cable (package was labeled PCI Express 6 pin to 8 pin Power Adapter, OWC S/N: 25077671?

Rating: 4/5 Excellent upgrade for the Mac Pro February 22, 2019 I bought the Radeon RX 580 Bundle for Mac Pro (2010-2012) about three months ago. I already had Metal support for my Mac Pro (Radeon 7950), but needed a little more oomph in GPU performance. Many apps are now using the GPU as much or more than the CPU for computational intensive apps. The RX 580 has performed admirably. In many cases it is 1.5X faster than the 7950. It also has the side benefit of being essentially silent. It only turns on its fans if it is really being pushed. So my Mac is very, very quiet most of the time.

I downgraded the card to 4 stars for two reasons. For most users these may not be an issue, but I feel it is important to be aware of them.

1.This card is not fully supported on the Mac Pro using High Sierra (10.13) or Mojave (10.14). Holding down keystrokes upon rebooting doesn’t work. E.g. holding down Command + s (single user mode), Shift key (safe mode), or option key (showing boot disk choices) upon reboot will end up with a blank screen that needs a hard shut down to be resolved. At least that is how it ends up on my 2012 Mac Pro.

2. If the bundle is still shipping with a single power cable, it may not be adequate in certain high intensity GPU usage. For me, when I used my favorite photo enlarging app (100% GPU usage), my Mac Pro would immediately completely shut down. I.e. the single cable tried to draw too much power. This was solved by my purchasing a dual 6 pin to single 8 pin power cable. After that upgrade the app worked perfectly.

So to conclude: The RX 580 is a great card with some very minor or major caveats depending on how you use your computer.

Response from OWC, Call Center March 5, 2019 Hello! We are currently looking into any issues we can find with the single power cable and will definitely be updating the bundle as necessary. Thank you for the excellent review!

Rating: 5/5 This is certianly a good option for a 5,1 MacPro December 8, 2018 I have a 2011 5,1 MacPro with a single 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon W3690 Processor along with 48GB (3 x 16GB) 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC memory modules and OWC Mercury Electra 3G 240GB SSD for the System Disk Boot Drive. The last OS X upgrade was El Capitan 10.11.6. Since most of what I do involves a heavy amount of Adobe CC Photoshop and InDesign usage along with a increasing amount of time being spent on both DaVinci Resolve Finial Cut Pro X for video editing, I was in need of graphics card with more GPU.

As such I wanted (pretty much needed) to up grade graphics card with at least double the amount of VRAM as my current 4GB graphics card as well as handle a OS upgrade from El Capitan to Mojave. Searching the forums like Mac Rumors how to do it along with what I will need to accomplish it was to say the least was daunting as the main issue was which graphics cards were actually compatible, one requiring Metal (required for Mojave) and the proper drivers, should you be attempting to use NVIDIA cards.

Looking through OWC’s website I found a very likely candidate in their selection of video cards with this one openly advertised as having Metal supporting Mac Pro for upgrade to macOS 10.14.x Mojave, not to mention providing 8 GB of VRAM through the card itself.

To make this story short, I got the card, swapped it out and upgraded the OS to Mojave all in one stroke. So far, everything from the OS to all the apps, including Microsoft Office 2011 are running beautifully!
